IPFS Gateways: Using a Dedicated Gateway With IPFS Search

Learn how to configure IPFS Search to use a Dedicated IPFS Gateway.

IPFS search is a tool or service that enables users to search for content that is stored on the IPFS network. IPFS search works by indexing the content that is stored on the IPFS network, creating a searchable database of the content.

Why Does Using a Dedicated IPFS Gateway Matter?

Public gateways can experience high amounts of latency since they are often used simultaneously by thousands of users throughout the world. Most public gateways impose rate limits to manage and maintain this latency, but even with imposed rate limits the most popular gateways are significantly slower to retrieve content than private, dedicated gateways.

Dedicated gateways offer much higher performance and lower latency than public gateways. For retrieving content stored all across IPFS, dedicated gateways can help improve the retrieval process significantly.

Read below to learn how to use IPFS Search to use a Dedicated IPFS Gateway.

Prerequisites:

1. Next, navigate to the Gateways page on the Filebase web console.

Filebase IPFS Dedicated Gateways are a feature only available to paid users. They are not available for users on the free tier.

2. Select the ‘Create Gateway’ button in the upper right corner.

3. A new window will open prompting you to provide a gateway name and select the gateway’s access level.

Gateway names are subject to the same naming restrictions as bucket names. All gateway names must be lowercase, between 3-63 characters, and must be unique.

4. Next, head over to the Chrome web store and download the IPFS Search extension for Chrome or Brave browser.

5. Once added, select the extension from the browser and select ‘Manage Extension’.

6. Select ‘Extension Options’.

7. Under ‘Default Gateway’ enter your Filebase IPFS Dedicated Gateway URL in the following format:

https://gateway-name.myfilebase.com/ipfs/

8. Then select ‘Apply’.

9. Now, in your web browser navigation bar, type “IPFS” followed by your search terms to search IPFS.

10. The top result will be listed and can be accessed directly by using the Space + Enter keys together.

Once opened, you can see that your IPFS dedicated gateway is being used to serve the page:
